Where are almonds Grown?

Updated: Nov 29

Mainly the United Sates, but only the state of California commercially grows almonds. This is due to the Mediterranean climate which almonds thrive in. Other states have and are trying, but so far only California is successful.  Almonds were first brought to California by the Spaniards, primarily the Franciscan Padres when they established the missions in California in the late 1700s and 1800’s. However, there were not very successful until almonds were planted more inland.

Today California farmers cultivate about 25 different varieties in the inland central valley counties from Bakersfield to Redding.  California produced 80% of the worlds almonds, it is the states #1 agricultural crop valued at $6.0 billion!  If the California almond industry fails, the state will be bankrupt.

California almonds are grown in over 6800 farms, 90% are family farms 300 acres or less. Only 2% are certified organic, but that number is growing.  Capay Hills Orchard, certified organic, is 14.6 acres.

Other nations which grow almonds include: Spain, Italy, France, Australia, Republic of Georgia, Turkey, India and Chile. There are probably a few others, but this is the bulk of it.

Economic value to California cannot be understated.

• The almond industry generates more than $21 billion in economic revenue and directly creates more than $11 billion of added value (the measure of California’s Gross State Product)

• The whole almond industry generates about 104,000 jobs statewide, ¾ of which are outside the almond industry

• Over 97,000 jobs are generated in the Central Valley of California - vital in a region that has long had high unemployment

California produces about 80% of the world’s almonds and 99% of the U.S. commercial supply.

Almonds are the U.S.’ #1 specialty crop export
